Metal Detectors essays On Feburary 2nd, 1996, two students and one teacher were killed when 14-year-old Barry Loukaitis brutally opened fire on his algebra class. In March of 1996, sixteen children and on teacher were killed at Dunblane Primary School; ten others were wounded in the vicious attack. Fast forward to 1997, where thirteen students were killed and another fourteen were wounded in grand total of five school shootings. The following year the number of school shootings increased by one, bringing to the total school shootings in 1998 to a total of six. In 1999, the number of school shootings surged to a total of seven with the number of students killed doubling that of the past year. (A Timeline of Recent School Shootings) Notice a trend? These staggering numbers of both killed and wounded students and faculty members could have easily been prevented had metal detectors been installed into each of these thirty-nine schools. 108 students and faculty members alike were killed in thirty-nine school shootings spanning from 1996 to the present. (A Timeline of Recent School Shootings) These numbers do not include the countless innocent others wounded during these devilish rampages. Life is a priceless thing and the death of each of those students did not have to occur, nor will another school shooting occur in the future, if metal detectors were installed in every school in our nation. 2 With the above information now knowledge, how could you ever oppose the idea of metal detectors being installed in every school in our nation to ensure safety? No parent should ever have to endure the nightmare of watching his or her child leave for school in the morning, only to be pronounced dead by end of the day.
